In one of the most down-to-earth speeches of his political career, President Trump condemned the rioters who stormed the Capitol just a few days ago.
Despite the objections of some, Trump was completely right to condemn the ‘protestors’ and the chaos they caused…
Here’s what the President had to say – and why he was right to say it:
It’s a scene that no-one could have imagined – right up until it happened. Rioters and looters breaking into the heart of one of America’s most important buildings, threatening congress, stealing historic property, even murdering a police officer.
Despite that, a shocking number of people refuse to condemn the assault on the Capitol.
So when President Trump took to the stage, he knew what he had to do…
To unilaterally condemn the rioters, leaving absolutely no room for doubt. Here’s the key part of what Trump had to say on Thursday:
“Like all Americans, I am outraged by the violence, lawlessness and mayhem… The demonstrators who infiltrated the Capitol have defiled the seat of American democracy. To those who engaged in the acts of violence and destruction, you do not represent our country. And to those who broke the law, you will pay.”
There’s none of Trump’s usual humor… he knows that a situation as serious as the Capitol riots has no room for jokes, and he clearly wanted to remove any chance of his words being taken out of context.
Imagine how it would feel to be in the President’s position… to see cultists, lunatics storming the Capitol, and to realize they all thought you agreed with them…
No wonder Trump was so clear.
At the same time, President Trump took the time to formally concede the election, while still noting the work he and his team have been doing to verify the vote.
The fact is, recounts should be an automatic part of the election. There’s really no reason not to actively verify counts before declaring an official winner – the fact that organizing a recount costs millions (if it’s even possible!) is ridiculous.
Sure, counting twice takes twice the time – who cares? Elections used to take months – a day’s delay for the 24/7 media cycle is a small price to pay for certainty.
Of course, there’s one last thing that you might not have noticed from the President’s speech – his closing message to his supporters:
“And to all of my wonderful supporters, I know you are disappointed, but I also want you to know that our incredible journey is only just beginning.”
Can we expect Trump to return in 2024? I think we’ll know the answer very soon…
